Scottsboro Trials:

In 1931, there was a gang rape involving two white girls and nine black teenagers on a Southern Railroad. At first, there was a white man who stepped on a black man's hand. The black man got angry and made all the white people get off the train while he remained with his other black friends. When they got caught, they were sent to jail, and two girls said that they were raped by the black men with weapons and such. When they denied the rape, they were sent to trial where all whites were against them.

The Great Depression:

The 1930's were a very difficult time for the entire United States, as well as the rest of the world. The country was in a depression due to the crash of the stock market in late 1929. The large majority of the population was impoverished and hungry, and 25% of Americans were unemployed. This left many families without any money to pay for shelter, or even food.
